So I finally got round to watching Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull last night. And I really wish I hadn’t bothered. I knew from about five minutes in that it wasn’t going to be good, so I should have switched off there rather than continuing through to the bitter end, slowly watching a childhood hero crash and burn in a truly tragic fashion.
There’s just so much wrong with the film that I really don’t know where to begin. Too much CGI, particularly in the car chase sequences, which manage to rob any excitement and drama from the proceedings – there’s no real peril there, just a bunch of made-up images flying about on-screen.
And the plot is wholly ridiculous – to be fair, the first three films were hardly gritty, documentary-style pieces, but they didn’t require half as much suspension of disbelief as this one does.
To say the film is a disappointment is the understatement of the decade. It is truly horrendous, and should be avoided by any Indy fan who’s lucky enough not to have seen it yet.
