Ghost Town is Ricky Gervais’ first leading role in a movie, and it’s actually quite good. It also stars Greg Kinnear, who’s always watchable, and Tea Leoni, who’s as gorgeous as ever.
Gervais plays a dentist who, during a routine operation, technically dies for several minutes but is soon brought back to life by the medical team. After this incident, he finds that he can see the ghosts of the dead, who are apparently always around us, but usually remain unseen.
What unfolds is an above average romantic comedy with few laugh-out-loud moments but an intelligent script and some well-crafted performances from the lead actors. It’s not a masterpiece by any means, but it’s a pretty solid film that achieves what it sets out to do.
