Quentin Tarantino is an eye-jabbingly infuriating man. When he’s good – as in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction – he’s hard to beat. But, to my mind, he hasn’t done anything particularly good for quite a while. And Death Proof is the worst film of his I’ve seen to date.
I think my main problem with it is that, like its companion film Planet Terror, it’s a horrendously self-indulgent piece of filmmaking. While it could be argued that the bad points in the film are an homage to the kind of films Death Proof was inspired by, it’s frustrating when you know that Tarantino can (and hopefully will) do so much better.
